mr. pibb + red vines = crazy delicious
last night, i was talking to a friend of mine who screen-tested (along with some of our other friends) for snl this fall. he mentioned the guy who knocked him out of the running, andy samberg - a stand-up. though i'm personally not crazy about the direction that snl is going in (hiring stand-ups over ensemble performers who actually train & do that kind of work each night) - i always root for them... and i gotta say, i'm a fan of this clip that chicago is abuzz about.

You know I watched this weeks SNL for the first time in YEARS. Which I feel terrible about because one of my old old friends, two casual friends, and an EX GIRLFRIEND all either write for or play on the show. Yet I "DVRd" it for HOWARD STERN...who I learned wasn't even on. (he was going to do a bit I guess, the reason it didn't happen was unclear) I was AMAZED at how bad it was. AMAZED! Apart from a few gags in Weekend Update, and the OK Tenacious D scene and song, I didn't laugh once. but this clip was fantastic. Like finding a diamond in a mound of bat shit.
A few thoughts:
1. I have been on the Chris Parnell rap bandwagon (rapwagon?) for years. He is the most underrated rapper of his generation. His ode to Britney Spears was jaw-dropping.
2. Mr. Pibb and red vines may be "crazy delicious", but even that combination can't compare to chomping down on the savory jugular of your flamboyant, oppressive, yet magical master. No regrets here.
3. SNL has rarely been as bad as its detractors say, nor as good as its apologists suggest. It's usually perfectly acceptable comedy (tm). Unspectacular, but not any worse than much of what is on television. Personally, I have some ethical concerns over Tina Fey shoe-horning herself into sketches ever since she became the head writer, but what do I know?
4. Finally, if you want to get Chicago buzzing over a rap video, just direct the residents of the Windy City to the link above.
Merry Christmas Tara! I hope you have a nice holiday season. I'll be in Ohio for Christmas for the first time in ages.
Why don't you try out for SNL? Every time I watch the show I think of you. You would be hilarious!
Take care,
Stevie Bell Saunders
stevie, if only it was that easy. you have to be asked to audition, and in order to even get there, there are several hoops. thanks, though.
