acqua de NO (get it?)

our sense of smell is our strongest sense for recall, people say. great! great when it comes to christmastimey baked goods, puppy/kitty breath, or the way a friend's sweaters smell like dryer sheets. sweet perfection. but what about when a smell makes you sad, annoyed, or even recoil in anger?

twice in the past week, i have been on a plane where the guy directly next to me is wearing this cologne, acqua de gio. both times i have felt personally attacked when i have encountered this smell. and what am i supposed to do? confront the guy? no, i gotta sit there and take it.

here's a list of things i'd rather do than ever smell this smell again:
*live in a turkish prison
*punch a baby in the face
*cough up yarn
*writhe in a pile of glass

please entertain me and name smells that make you angry, sad, or if you must - delighted. also, generally? - don't wear cologne on planes.

Pachuli...it wouldn't be bad if I had ever met anyone who could use it in moderation. Unfortunately I have not yet met that person. It is either the no pachuli person, or the enough pachuli for five people person...sorry, Lori.

For some reason I cannot stand the smell of rye bread...so I cannot eat it either. People seem to LOVE rye bread and I can't get past the smell.

Dorito breath is one of my least favorite smells. Ugh. I don't eat Doritos due to the dorito breath phenomenon.

these answers are great so far.

rance, you are totally right about patchouli in general- it's always used as a scent to coovvvver a scent, like glade. it never seems to be used alone.

regina: on rye bread - now i know i'll notice it. rye b is a recent thing i've started to like. what's it smell like? kind of musty? i'm terrified.

eileen, on dorito breath: amen. but theyyy tasty, girl!

I'm a big fan of fresh plastic, like a shower curtain. Mmmmm....

Also, for some reason - I really dig formaldihyde. Must be some sort of frog dissection fetish.
